Consolidated PB2Y Coronado – The American Flying Boat of World War II
The Consolidated PB2Y Coronado was a large, four-engine American flying boat developed by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation for the United States Navy. Designed for long-range maritime patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and military transportation, the Coronado became an important aircraft during World War II, particularly in the Pacific Theater.
First flown on December 17, 1937, the PB2Y Coronado was developed as a larger and more powerful successor to the famous PBY Catalina. Its distinctive twin-tail configuration, high-mounted wings, and four Pratt & Whitney radial engines gave it an impressive appearance and the ability to operate across vast ocean distances.
Design and Development
The PB2Y Coronado featured a sturdy, boat-shaped fuselage that allowed it to take off and land directly on water without requiring a conventional runway. Its retractable wingtip floats provided stability during water operations while helping reduce aerodynamic drag in flight.
Initially designed as a maritime patrol bomber, the Coronado underwent several improvements throughout its production. Later variants featured upgraded engines, enhanced defensive armament, and modifications for carrying passengers, cargo, and wounded military personnel.
World War II Operations
During World War II, the Consolidated PB2Y Coronado served the United States Navy in various roles, including maritime reconnaissance, bombing missions, military transport, and medical evacuation. It supported operations across the Pacific, where long distances between military installations made flying boats particularly valuable.
Although the Coronado saw limited combat compared with other American patrol aircraft, it proved especially useful for transporting personnel and essential supplies between remote naval bases. Its spacious interior and water-landing capabilities made it a versatile aircraft for wartime logistical operations.
Historical Significance and Legacy
A total of 217 Consolidated PB2Y Coronado aircraft were manufactured, including prototypes. Beyond its service with the United States Navy, a small number were supplied to Britain’s Royal Air Force for transport duties.
One of the aircraft’s most notable historical connections was its role in transporting senior naval personnel during the closing stages of World War II. A surviving PB2Y-5R Coronado carried members of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s staff to Japan for the surrender ceremonies in September 1945.
Today, the only surviving Consolidated PB2Y Coronado is preserved at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. This remarkable aircraft stands as a lasting reminder of America’s wartime aviation achievements and the important role flying boats played in military transportation, maritime operations, and naval history.
